AnimeFlow's Conclusion: El Hazard 2: Tape 2 and Tenchi Forever

El Hazard 2: Promise for Reunion

Genre: comedy/fantasy
Length: 60 minutes (2 episodes)
Audience Age: 13+
Opinion: No El Hazard fan should be let down by this bonus story to the anime universe.
This is a review of the subtitled VHS version.

Tenchi Forever: The Movie

Genre: dramedy/sci-fi fantasy
Length: 95 minutes (Theatrical Film)
Audience Age: 16+
Opinion: The only addition to the series that can make any anime fan respect "Tenchi Muyo!".
This is a review of the dubbed VHS version.

Die Hard Game Fan's critic's favorite anime of 2000.

Like every other "Tenchi Muyo!" theatrical addition, the film starts with a seemingly normal day for Tenchi that is until an argument between Ryoko and Ayeka forces him to flee into the forest near their house. Looking for some peace and quiet, to his surprise he sees a bud of a camellia tree, but it is out of season. He searches for and finds this beautiful plant which seems to draw him into it.

Six months later, Tenchi has yet to return from his trek into the woods. Ayeka and Ryoko have gone to Tokyo to find him while the other girls have gone to Planet Jurai and the Space Science Academy to find out where he could have gone. Could Tenchi have gone to another world or, as Washu has hypothesized, another dimension? What does Yosho know about the tree he planted? If you recall why Tenchi ran off, does he even want to comeback? Despite no one's life maybe on the line, this could be one of the gravest scenarios.

No matter how tedious Tenchi Muyo! is, I never mind seeing new stories about the series' hero. Tenchi never seems to disappoint its fans, so when "Tenchi Forever" came out, I had to pick it up. Surprisingly, I did not expect it to be so great and that it also earned the 16 Up rating by being the most mature and sophisticated Tenchi installment ever.

Haruna's tree spirit 23K (scanned from the back of VHS box)What a brilliant film for a TV/OVA (Original Video Animation) series. Tenchi Forever's colors are bland (possibly for dramatic effect), there are not many technical advances over the other series, and by no means is it as funny as the lamest Tenchi episodes. But its ability of finding how to use the main characters to their full dramatic potential puts it above the rest of the series.

This film nearly being a total drama justifies its Japanese theatrical release by having the essential dark and dreary plot, but it makes it work which is a rarity for spin offs to the big screen. Perhaps some characters are under utilized and I found the ending somewhat disappointing (an issue of personal taste/ideals), nothing else from the film can bring it down from being the top release of all Tenchi series.

Episode 108: B-Fest 2023: Kaiju & Blobs & Roller Disco & Dafoe Leather & Uwe Boll

Eva's expression is beyond appropriate for Uwe Boll

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CM Darth) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

Life has been pretty hectic recently. I have just started a second job, so finding time to write the blogs for each podcast episode has obviously been difficult. So far, Mondays have been free, but that is just the prelude to a 50-hour work week. By Sunday, catching up on all the AEW Wrestling programming is what comes first and foremost.

I am still determined to keep up the podcast, but the past week was tough. There was a recording scheduled, but other people have lives, so it did not pan out. Unless guests want to stay up late, Sundays are the only day that I am certain can be made for podcasting. With that said, if you have a movie or topic that you want to chat about, send an email to russthebus07@gmail.com.

Or, if you cannot be on the show, let me know of cool cinematic events that I can attend. Or, give me some feedback about the idea of a Patreon. I have to get gas money to drive up to the Music Box Theater every weekend. Two more stays are necessary for me to remain a gold member with Hilton Honors as well.

The actual solution to my issues is, again, to move up to Chicagoland. My landlords upping my rent another $50 like the prior year. What happened to consideration initially provided for the red stain that knocked $50 off my initial rent? What could that substance be?

So I think that means B-Fest was a success for me this year. I am bitching more about my life than enduring what is essentially a double feature in "Xanadu" and Uwe Boll's "BloodRayne". Regardless of the quality of the closing features, fun was still had throughout the two films. That is a step up from last year's "Godzilla" cartoon and "Beast from Haunted Cave".

It may have been the larger crowd. The audience must have been three times larger than the 2022 crowd. In other words, I did not get a couple of Italian exploitation films as a door prize. This larger crowd did allow for some shadow casts and other odes to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". More importantly, I got to see Rick Moranis try to stand up to a leather suspender-sporting Willem Dafoe in "Streets of Fire".

"Big Man Japan" was awesome and "The Children" and "American Ninja" are the type of films that drive this podcast. With how hectic my life is, I am proud to say that I am already pumped for "B-Fest 2024". See you then.

Everyone Was #Mystic #KungFu #Fighting

Ninety For Chill: The #Podcast with @CatBusRuss

Episode 171: #AniMay Spectacle: "Jujutsu Kaisen 0" with James Slunder

Eva the Queen Kitty is mystical as any of the JJK student body

And this is why ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is the top trivia team in Downstate Illinois.
James Slunder comes to the rescue to make sure CatBusRuss does the month of Ani-May right. The team's self-proclaimed anime expert suggested our host watch the prequel to the "Jujutsu Kaisen" television series, the 2021 motion picture "Jujutsu Kaisen 0".

The result of this suggestion is a clash between generations of fandom. We use the term self-proclaimed expert to describe James because he was not around during the days of Streamline Pictures/Central Park Media and multicolored VHS tapes. Our host feels there has to be something from his tape collecting days that gives him the edge when it comes to being an otaku.

Anime has become a lot brighter and more colorful, and CatBus may sound like an old man shouting at clouds because it is too busy for it to have that nineties, Suncoast charm. He also did not watch many magical high school themed cartoons.

Fortunately, JJK0 (James says that is what the cool kids call it.) is "Harry Potter" on steroids. Who needs Quidditch when you wield a cursed katana alongside a giant, anthropomorphic Panda and a classmate whose voice is cursed to the point that he can only safely speak in rice ball ingredients. And of course you have some "will they, won't they" relationship to tease some tension. This is how they needed to sell the third "Fantastic Beast" flick.

Episode 173: Mortal Kombat (1995) & Collateral Cinema

Eva the Queen Kitty being blessed by the penguin god of thunder

CatBusRuss and Collateral Cinema's Beau Maddox have been interacting with each other since our host joined Bluesky. Over the past week, they finally have found a feature that the two felt good about collaborating on. "Ninety For Chill: The Podcast with CatBusRuss" has covered Paul WS Anderson's "Mortal Kombat" before, but that was to pay tribute to French action star Christopher Lambert. Beau and Russ will take a look at this beloved feature from all angles. The effects that still hold up, the less is more style of direction, and the charm of special effects that do not hold up after 4K TV's came into existence.

Does this lead to the conclusion that the nineties, with hindsight, were a good time for video game film adaptations? Is Hollywood still underutilizing Cary-Hiroyuki Togawa and Linden Ashby? Should this script been delivered to John Carpenter?

We discover the two have their polarizing opinions of the work of Tom Green, so we quickly learn that conversational fireworks maybe a possibility. Perhaps it is that heat that lead to the pod's technical difficulties and not Beau's phone overheating. Russ hopes that throwing in his review of Sylvester Stallone's "Escape Plan: The Extractors" will be an adequate apology for those issues.

CatBusRuss could not have fallen into a more appropriate way to close out the month of May (a.k.a. AniMay [anime + May]). Coinciding with the release of "Fast X", our host watched a couple of features that actually succeed at what the Vin Diesel franchise tries to capture. These are crazy stories that do not get caught up in male soap opera and "Just Kiss Already!" moments. Unlike "The Fast and the Furious" franchise, both "Redline" and "MFKZ" are must see films for entirely different reasons.

Neither of them are thankfully a "Point Break" knock off. Each represents an element that "The Fast" franchise that just seems to be too ridiculous. "MFKZ" is all about the craziness presumed of non-white communities and how action packed that must be. "Redline" is all about the living life a quarter mile at a time, or should I say parsec. Each feature should be seen by any animation fan. One for its "Saints Row" vibe. The other for nearly being perfect.

Allow me to get out of third-person. Happy Prof. Shurtleff of Illinois Central College? I (CatBusRuss) will try not to make so much light of violent death in this summation. This is my declaration of changing perspective.

I am always busy, but it does not feel too hectic right now. The bills have been paid. Fun was had at Pour Bros. Free Trivia. Hell, there was minor league (A-ball like the Peoria Chiefs) flirting to be had.

On the flipside, there was trying to be supportive to a friend who feels like the outcast of their trivia team. (I only feel like the one to be ousted from my trivia team). Then there was taking home a 25, generally wise, year-old home after an alcohol and medication mishap. The crew at the Barrel House 34 on Walnut were kind of assholes about him taking up the only stall in the men's room to find relief from that.

I am not a fan of Quality (the bar on Neil) because of the lack of atmosphere, but at least the staff does not judge someone for getting sick. You make sure they are cleaned up and ridicule them playfully their next visit. If we end up there next week, that best be their attitude. Of course, there is a great deal of pride that I possess about being the ideal patron.

Do these details of my week make for a fine excuse to not writing this blog until four days after the podcast was posted? Probably not. I guess I am really patting my own back about just living my life a little healthier. Wednesday was a movie night, but I only had one shift to worry about. Tuesday, dinner was had and it was straight to bed. Tucking myself in before 11 pm narrows down my time to blog, but do I need to? The answer is yes. If I am going to post the support of Chris Hardwick from the "ID10T" podcast before my episodes that tell the listener to head to ninetyforchill.com, I have to.

Yes, I only had one shift yesterday, but I had to finish my rewatch of "WestWorld" Season 3. All it took was one ad for Kevin McCarthy's victory lap over the debt ceiling deal on YouTube to tell me to further appreciate my physical media. There is a work story to be told about regretting some charges to secure there building, but I digress. But a PS5 media controller would be nice.

So, this episode is me just talking about cartoons for a half hour. I am doing my best to come up with a guest for the June 6th episode (if you can recall my episode which was dedicated to Jim Carrey's sub 100-minute movie filmography, "The Number 23" can officially make the upcoming episode 666.). Hopefully somebody will step up. Two weeks of me on my own seems a bit much. June 13th will be my "Renfield" podcast to celebrate the feature's physical release.

I am still determined to keep up the podcast, but the past week was tough. Unless guests want to stay up late, Sundays are the only day that I am certain can be made for podcasting. With that said, if you have a movie or topic that you want to chat about, send an email to russthebus07@gmail.com.

CatBusRuss is pondering how often he should be releasing new episodes of "Ninety For the Chill". This current season has had a great balance of episodes dedicated to his own personal binges and conversations with great guests. But with so many podcasts having a monthly or biweekly release schedule, is the CatBus working too hard?

The episode for next week is in the can, so this week, our host is keeping up the ani-May theme by watching Studio Ghibli's spiritual successor's, Studio Ponoc, first feature, "Mary and the Witch's Flower". It is a fun kids film. Then CatBus pulls out some reviews that sum up his own maturity. It starts with coming of age in the punk rock world with "London Town" and moves on to the oversexed college experience with Gregg Araki's "Kaboom".

From sexually explicit cinema, CatBus makes a quick transition to the other extreme of indie cinema with the Soska Sisters' remake of David Cronenberg's "Rabid". Cronenberg was one of the two patron saints of this podcast. The other is Stuart Gordon. What sounds better than Gordon with Lance Henriksen? To find out what that is like, you will hear a review for "The Pit and the Pendulum". If that is not enough of a Henriksen fix, stick around for a review of Stan Winston's directorial debut, "Pumpkinhead".

Am I going to regret writing this blog tonight? I say that because I do not have a morning shift to attend on Wednesday. Should I muster up or try to save the strength to party on Tuesday night?

Why go out? Because I think history is repeating itself. I have my trivia team, but the team captains are expecting their first kid. That is what I think the first sign of being complete grown ups is. The coworker who introduced me to the team is starting a new job at some point, so who knows where that will take him? It was graduation weekend last week, so there are a handful of new friends who will be moving on. How do I start over again?

Obviously, I am looking into finding a new therapist (the tab is opened on the browser right now), but that comes with more stress than just worrying about the Christian nature of the only recommendation I received that is definitely covered by my insurance. The stress stems from the $600 I am expected to pay for lab work. Hopefully my primary will be understanding when it comes to me cancelling the next set.

I am still determined to keep up the podcast, but the past week was tough. Unless guests want to stay up late, Sundays are the only day that I am certain can be made for podcasting. With that said, if you have a movie or topic that you want to chat about, send an email to russthebus07@gmail.com.
