Episode 55: Ghostbusters: Afterlife - Slime-Free Family Fun (Marshmallows Fluff Does Not Count)

If you remove the credits for "Ghostbusters (1984)", the runtime is only 36 seconds too long to qualify for NinetyForChill.com's parameters. Cool Movies Darth is a fan of "Solo: A Star Wars Story", so like Han, he chose to round the runtime down to the lower parsec. This allows him to address the latest film in the paranormal comedy franchise, "Ghostbusters: Afterlife".

I have taken on this episode by myself to assure that the guest content is not overly repetitive. The assistance that Gregory Carl, ThePoeticCritic, and Michael Dubois is always appreciated, but this is not their show yet. With that said, it is not overly hard to influence me, especially during my financial strains after the loss of my banking job.

Since this is a brief, 15-minute episode, I do not go in depth about my struggles beyond having to watch a lot of movies in hopes that they meet the parameters of my podcast BEFORE the credits role. Four movies on Sunday, and aside from "Ghostbusters" "meeting" the proper runtime, I ended going through three "Predator" films before I found one that allows us to discuss that franchise.

And that feature was Paul WS Anderson's "AVP: Alien Versus Predator". It is a fun popcorn feature like all of Anderson's films, but lets just say I am keeping Dan O'Bannon and H.R. Geiger's creature away from the podcast. We should not be that lenient for content.

Since I am chatting about Paul WS Anderson, my original intention for this podcast was to cover "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City". This is because, for the most part, all of the films in the original series would qualify for the show's parameters. Unfortunately, I failed to realize that the physical media release of the latest RE feature drops today (2/8/22). If I want to use a Redbox promo code, I am going to use one. Thus, leniency was needed this past weekend.

When it comes to the feature that I ended up renting, I thought was that it was a fine ode to the original feature. It may not have the same wit because you do not want children improvising, but I would say that allows auteur Jason Reitman to make the film that he wanted. He can count on it being his dialogue and the feature following his design. There are a few tweaks that could have been made, but this tribute to Harold Ramis tugged on my heart strings so that I immediately dismissed them. And that is why we take notes to make sure I give you these critiques on the podcast.

If there is any negative to this feature, it is that now I really want to forget about the praise I gave to "Ghostbusters (2016)". That is still a fun movie, provided you never saw GB1 or even GB2. The 2016 film had no idea on what fans of the franchise wanted. And with "Afterlife" going slime-free, we further want Paul Feig's miss to never be released in 8K.

Like many of Wes Anderson's features, oddball circumstances had led to ThePoeticCritic saving my bum. She found Anderson's filmography to be interesting enough to give us some content. I bring the breakdowns of features like "Bottle Rocket" and "Rushmore" while TPC emphasizes the importance of his freedom from the revived studio system. Anderson is essentially the independent scene's cheerleader. Please forgive the "Heroes" reference.

As with the characters in Anderson's work, there were difficulties with the recording process. I think I am mastering the Zoom PodTrak P4 when it comes to setting up the levels. When it comes to the layout of the buttons, this ended being three separate files and we lost 10 minutes of ThePoeticCritic and I determining whether his style is more Coen Brothers or more Tim Burton. Either way, he maybe the best talent in cinema right now.

Which is why she is adamant that he stays away from any and all franchises. I am intrigued by the concept of him directing a Submariner movie with a "Life Aquatic" aesthetic. If you want a peak at the best contention between us siblings, we debate why she has yet to watch any Edgar Wright features. She claims there is too much brilliance from the past to be concerned with the presence. I try to make an argument that Wright proves there is still something worthwhile to current cinematic culture.

 

We did not take the time to lighten the mood by referencing the RiffTrax short she showed me earlier that day, "More Dangerous Than Dynamite". But I took the time to document and put over some of her great guides when it comes to venturing into #FilmTwitter. Typing this blog post up makes me wonder about some of my big sister's friends. @Ruby_Stevens? Could it me a burner account for my eldest sibling? My mom's nickname was "Ruby". Is she holding out on cinematic knowledge? But I digress.

 

As for next week's episode, it will be the conclusion to the comedy of errors that gave us this episode. Two previous guests tried to get a hold of me to cover the early works of James Gunn. Neither of them would have worked out to record in time for this week, but its great that to know the show is good enough for guests to want to come back. I am on vacation this week, so we will definitely get the Gunn Show off the ground.

With that said, I have got a lot of time till next Monday to record podcasts. I have been asking for weeks for assistance in composing an episode dedicated to vampire features like "The Lost Boys" trilogy, "Near Dark", and the "Underworld" movies. Please pardon there being but one cat (Eva, at least it is the most important cat) for this week's poster. Skimble is a bit on the dark side when it comes to his fur and it is very tricky to get the two of them in one shot.

 

I was unable to secure a guest for this weeks podcast. It may have been for the better since I had to schedule time for Skimble to spend with Ally of Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy and I was also attending my little brother's diaper party. The little one is due in August I believe.

 

The show must go on, and fortunately for me, ThePoeticCritic from Letterboxd (my big sister) offered up some wisdom when it came to our late 1990's VHS bonding. We pretty much give Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy's RiffTrax free advertising. Where did we direct this wisdom? I do my best to get her to tell us what she thinks is the best means to let the former "Mystery Science Theater 3000" make movies funny.

My older sister and I discuss how you should spend your money when it comes to getting your traxs. With many services like Pluto and Tubi allowing you to access the films that have fallen into the public domain, we determine that it is best to purchase tracks to give you fresh perspectives on the movies you love. Then we argue about whether or not you need them to get through Zack Snyder's "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice".

If people will just watch the three-hour cut, they will find that there is really nothing to complain about.

For those who listened to last week's episode about Ivan Reitman, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis's works leading up to the most important comedy of the 1980's, I took the time to watch and objectively enjoy "Ghostbusters 2016". Here is to hoping I can convince you to give it a chance, but after my take on the DCEU's first "embarrassment", that may be a task. At least the Tomato Meter is on my side.

Before you get to the show, I really must implore to you how important it is for me to get a guest for next week's show. This podcast does not work with out you. Skimble can be quite the conversationalist, but I think he would even get fed up with me mistranslating his mrow's for a half hour. Just give me a theme, movie, director or actor, and I am sure that together we can come up with a better experience than "Suicide Squad".

With that said, I have been prepping myself for a vampire-themed episode. Thus, it will not be hard for me to come up with an "preview" episode to get the audience pumped for it. This week, my flexibility is demonstrated when it comes to coming up with content as I invite Andrew Tiede to the pod. He let me know what Ivan Reitman directed and Harold Ramis penned feature he wanted to gush over, so we talk about the sub 100-minute movies that got us to that paranormal comedy from 1984. And then we gush about the battle with the marshmallow behemoth.

 

@The_Couch_Man on TikTok and I do our best to get from the original "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" to "Ghostbusters". The focus was intended to be about Harold Ramis's directorial debut "Caddyshack" and Ivan Reitman's minimal effort that Bill Murray carried, "Meatballs", but you cannot dismiss the features surrounding Dan Aykroyd rise which allowed him to sell a space janitor movie that nearly had a German-themed John Candy. This leads to reminiscing about the power of John Belushi that John Landis facilitated.

 

And how can we overlook "Stripes" and how parents would let the kids of the early 80's watch anything? We discuss what you could get away with in comedies, but we do our best to provide context to all of the rapiness of "Porky's" and "Revenge of the Nerds". That seemed to be an easier topic to chat up than the weirdness that was 1989 cinema with its normalization of PG-13. I think I may owe Andrew a formal apology for that tangent bringing up "Nothing But Trouble".

We take the time to chat about the apparent lack of appreciation for Ernie Hudson. All of the features in the "Ghostbusters" franchise get a piece of the pod. More importantly, the timelessness of the original "Ghostbusters" is celebrated by trying to find out what movies are even comparable to the concept. Maybe "Roger Rabbit"...

If we get negative about anything, it is the realization that Ivan Reitman may not be the director that his son is. Since a comic was the guest and an aspiring writer is your host, maybe that is a win. This leads me to be further excited about "Ghostbusters: Afterlife". With Jason Reitman being one of the best five North American directors out there, how could this feature go wrong?
