90 Min Netflix: "Yoga Hosers" Kevin Smith's Ode and Betrayal of Millenial Canucks

How would you spend the eve of your first night off in 19 days? My mom wants to see Netflix's "The Irishman" and being a good son, in spite of her belief that Robert De Niro must be suffering from some mental disorder do to his curse-filled anti-Trump rants that have no valid base or articulation, I cleared out my queue devoted to movies I would probably never get around to buying (under 30 titles, surprisingly) to allow her a queue of her own. While I was reinserting these films into my primary queue, notices of titles being removed caught my attention. "Philadelphia" was one of those films, but since it was 125 minutes, Kevin Smith's "Yoga Hosers" was what I watched in its stead.

It seems that "Yoga Hosers" is widely considered to be the most pathetic directorial effort from the auteur, and being one of the biggest apologists for Smith, hearing that his flick about two Canadian clerks fighting off Nazi bratwursts sucked made me hesitate viewing it since the 2016 release. But I am a completist for better or for worst. (My restraint should be admired for the amount of times that I have typed worst without grabbing the pun.) Perhaps it is because I am apologist for the best screenwriter to not win an Oscar, that I was pleasantly surprised by this flick.

Or I was rewarded for being a completist in terms of collecting and viewing. Because I know what Smith finds funny, nothing awful came out of this feature. This film was to be expected at some point, and it is better to get it out of his system before he gets an AARP cover. Boomers will not stand for this kind of fun filmmaking.

Two years after Eh-2-Zed clerks Colleen C. and Colleen M. helped save the American podcaster who was transformed into a walrus, odd things are once again abound in Winnipeg. That figures since everyone seems to be against these Instagrammers. Their prep school P.E. teacher is fed up with the amount class time they spend on their phones. Yogi Bayer, their yoga teacher, is under constant threats from Warner Bros. over the name of his studio. And their 35-year drummer for their back of the store rock band, Glamthrax, still is not on the same page as his sophomore counter parts. But the biggest problem seems to be Tabitha, Colleen C's stepmom.

The two have just been invited to their first Grade 12 party, but because the Colleens keeps getting in the way of any chance she has to get intimate with her husband, as the convenient store manager, Tabitha is going to make them work that night as she whisks him off to Niagra Falls. In all actuality, the worst things for them is that the grade 12 party was being hosted by homicidal Satanists who are more than happy to bring the party to them. To make matters worst, these may not be the only killers out on a Friday night. It will take all their defensive Yoga skills to survive the night, but how will they explain the body count and sauerkraut that will be left in their wake?

"Yoga Hosers" biggest problem is that it does not know what it wants to be. I think it could have just been Canadian "Clerks" and work, but I am a customer service specialist. Just because I can deal with a new 90-minute set of irrelevance directed at idiots does not mean that the masses can. Hence you get a story about Generation Z versus Bratzis. The problem with that is not being able to see straight women doing that. If one of the C's was Belushi or Murray-esque, no question the film would be better.

So this movie is a concept that is unsellable, which is sad because there is plenty in it that is worth buying. Who would not be curious if the Canadian Nazi played by Haley Joe Osment was looking menacing over the convenience store from the heavens, complete with armband of course?

The movie works as a great B-movie, but when you get something from the director of "Chasing Amy" on a five-million dollar budget, you are expecting an indie film. This is definitely the wrong way to approach this feature because Kevin Smith has established who he is and what you should expect. "Yoga Hosers" seems to be the most fun on screen many of these actors have had. It may indicate that Smith is currently short on ideas, but by creating some new characters that he knows friends will comeback to, we may get a new Askewniverse.

This is definitely sounding like an apology to Smith for the backlash, so let me just list what is worthwhile about the flick. Nazi Osment; Yogi Justin Long; Work for stars who have taken a chance on this director; Johnny Depp collecting a check while having fun; An impressionist/mad scientist; Everyone you want to see lay down an overly thick Canadian accent, delivering on that accent.

The latter portion leaves me fearing what the Canucks will think of us. It is fun enough to pop in fun Canadian stereotype items (the "Good Old Hockey Game" cover during a Bratzi battle kept my interest), having Natasha Lyonne and Genesis Rodriguez be annoying with it may cause a culture war. Like "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" animosity.

If you want a great B-Movie, "Yoga Hosers" delivers. It leaves me thinking that I may have under complicated my zombie-wrestling comedy "Main Event of the Dead". (You be the judge by requesting a treatment via russthebus07@gmail.com.) Just know that you are seeing a B-Movie and appreciate that a director is allowed to make what he wants.

90 min at 3.99: Ultraviolet...just to prep for the anime sequel

You remind me of the babe.
What babe?
The babe with the power.
What power?
The power of VUDU.

That was lot of research in how I purchased "Ultraviolet" to justify cutting out some sleep for content. I think coming up with a David Bowie/Jim Henson reference about a Milla Jovovich headlined film demonstrates my genius. With that said, I think you should give my pro-wrestling zom-com "Main Event of the Dead" some attention. Feel free to request a treatment of the script via russthebus07@gmail.com. Promotional suggestions would be nice to get this B-movie script into production.

Regardless of my genius, I am glad "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" clocked in at 1:47. This means that I will not have to repeat that quest for cleverness. Not putting Iain Glen's or Ruby Rose's name on the poster makes me feel that it does not deserve more promotion.

The search for a digital receipt in the @MainEventZombie Twitter account's email (after my primary email search failed) also let me find some classic tweets from the "@midnight" era. I now have approved stingers for blog post. Unfortunately I will not have the time to write this blog in one sitting. Ironic, because dove right into this blog morning. It just took me the majority of it adjusting the layout. Too much Pinterest time to balance the content and empty space is all I will say about that.

Because I stayed up two hours for blog content, that means there was not that much excitement to be had this week. At least that I can complain about that is. If I choose to move to a big city and get back into hospitality, dragging the name of a corporation that feels just in screwing me out of a wedding trip through the mud would probably be ill advised.

And as I typed that up, my better quarter (of course I am giving Eva the cat the majority of my quality) is desperate for a road trip, despite a wedding will not allow for the sites of the DC area, so I will need to come up with reservations today from the corporation that will not even revisit my Better Business Bureau complaint until Saturday. If the wage I made under them was not insult enough.

It may be a good idea to try selling my movie idea directly to All Elite Wrestling. If they buy it and let me into their fold, I can totally bury them. You can tell I am coming up on 40 if that is now the dream.

Aside from my past coming back to bite me in a bad way (I would not mind if the portion that ditched me for their sobriety was doing the knawing), there is not much stress in my life otherwise. Communication between me and my girlfriend could be better, but it forced us to have fun at a coworker hosted Halloween party. That is a new experience for us. Here is to hoping to keep that rolling at my other job's Illini Hockey night tomorrow.

As I said, communication could be better. Halloween was cool with her getting over the arguments of me buying stuff/spoiling her. She at least laughed off the concept that there may come a day where she may be of no worth to me, so exploit it while she can. The main determining factor in the need to better communicate is that we watched "Beetlejuice" for the holiday evening. Tim Burton's second feature is only an hour and 32 minutes. If she would have only suggested this viewing 24 hours earlier, I would not have to reevaluate my decision of repurchasing a Milla Jovovich film that I was only holding on to the DVD of for her commentary track to explain what the hell this action flick was.

That lack of communication hurts more than me not pushing her into allowing me to abandon the wedding and letting me head to Downtown Peoria and Berwyn for My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, a sex on wheels weekend. Maybe I am a one-man relapse device.

Ultraviolet

In a world you may not understand, humans have been warring with hemophages, those infected with a vampiric virus originally designed to create better soldiers. This is not a trailer so that neither works as a great opening line for this review or the film. Exposition has a purpose, but the primary message of the film is that explanations are something that can be abandoned when you have CG. The story is about Violet, a single-hemophage killing machine who is looking for a cure to the virus which may be in the package she has stolen from Vice Cardinal Daxus, the de-facto leader of the human government. An end to hemoglophagia would serve as a revenge for the system causing her to lose her husband and unborn child via experimentation.

Instead of there being vials and needles, the package is a young clone of Daxus. The boy, Six, holds the key to a cure, but it has nothing to physically do with him. What is established is that the kid is dying. Because the kid's a work in progress, Daxus want to regain all of that tissue. It may not be the end of this viral age, but Violet's maternal instincts will make it so she will protect and allow Six the most anyone can get out of life.

I hate to be so harsh, probably because it reflects on my own taste and desire to claim Milla Jovovich as a talented actress, but "Ultraviolet" is a mess on every level. After completing that statement, Jovovich was not a mess. Her performance was as good as the script allowed, but the director's attempt to make her a PG-13 level pin up in every shot shows that writer/director Kurt Wimmer has/had a greater obsession with her presence than any nerd on the planet.

He is/was aware that she is married to his style over substance peer Paul W.S. Anderson? His phoney gunkata martial arts is not going to whisk her off her feet. Did he even perceive how stupid punching with a gun firing in the same hand looks?

Wimmer is synonymous with incoherent story telling. He is an M. Night Shyamalan knock off without any chill. Everything has to be a twist. As I had already established, the film thinks it did not  need exposition it because of the "cutting-edge" computer graphics. This created an environment that makes it dependent upon his curveball nature. You need a fastball to establish the strike zone, otherwise all your off-speed offerings will require Bob Ueker descriptions.

As for the CG, high definition, let alone FDR (bought into the 4K too soon), has not been kind to it. It felt like "Tron" but with everything filled in. The lines in the Disney classic are thin. If they were filled, it becomes a blur of color. The film also seems to lean on, "obviously this isn't real, so bullets and explosions can look cooler." These bullets and explosions would makes this a B-Movie if you were unaware of the budget.

Despite all of the flaws, if you are looking to direct action, I can see this film providing some situations that you can only improve upon. The film may even look good in storyboards. Timur Berkmambetov has some very similar scenes in his big three features, ("Day Watch", "Night Watch", and "Wanted"). He is a now under-rated director (I will get back to you about "Ben-Hur" [a $5 iTunes special]), so as far as I am concerned, those are now his scenes. If he got the inspiration from this film, he braver than I. I have only watched this thrice.

"Ultraviolet" is an attempt to create something cool without giving the prospective audience a reason to. Milla Jovovich already had "Resident Evil", so this was totally unnecessary. Perhaps you can appreciate some of the intentions, but you are probably looking for reasons to justify spending any of your money on this feature.

This is a tutorial into how to waste $30 million and potential IP for the sake of being an auteur. Director/Writer Kurt Wimmer may have proven with this film to be a bigger disaster than Ed Wood. "Ultraviolet" is best viewed with a couple of robot friends and some illicit substances.

The End of NXT Viewership: Rebooking Survivor Series 2019.

WWE has wisely removed the replay of NXT Takeover from being on the Hulu feed. I say wisely because, before AEW, that was how I watched those shows. Why would I fund a company that many feel is responsible for three deaths due to their lack of concussion care and will gladly take blood money from Saudi Arabia if I could watch their best shows for free (well, at least $2 cheaper alongside "The Handsmaid's Tale"?

For someone who finds New York to be where quality goes to die, watching a Takeover on a Sunday was awesome. If WWE was going to counter program against themselves, what kind of contrarian would I be if I did not ignore Vince McMahon trying to fuel Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns's egos?

As Wrestletalk stated in their review for NXT Takeover Wargames 3, the refreshing thing about a NXT's Women's first (like the Wargames's match this year) is that it just feels like what women's wrestling should be, just wrestling. So, watching Takeover instead of Summer Slam means I did not have to deal with the bullshit that is the Women's Evolution of Stephanie McMahons.

NXT offered a lot for those fed up with the tired vision of Vince McMahon. It is a pity that fans like me should not have time for it.

How much wrestling do you expect me to watch in one night? When you have competition, and a side in the competition, I am not going to change the channel during a commercial break. If you work a relatively uneventful job like me, you need stuff to read. After reading DC Black's "Harleen: Number 1", and considering how the ultimate fictional empath can become a murderous malcontent, you best believe the NXT spoilers may best for someone with codependency issues.

When you look at my other wrestling viewership, there is no time for replays anyhow. "NWA Powerrr" results are deemed not as newsworthy as those of the competitors, so I am free to watch (or binge) it at my own leisure (typically on Monday between 7 pm CST and 9 pm CST). Tuesdays are when the extra hour NXT lacks comes on YouTube. Do I need to mention these are free (sorry Impact, ROH, WOW and World of Sport on Statium)?

And I have the entire NJPW library at my finger tips, and I got plenty of catching up to do there. I am only going to devote 999 a month to one service. HBO Max getting AEW would be ideal.

Is there a way for NXT to win me back? Yes. Right now, it is all about match ups. Sorry Hunter, I get around to indie shows, so I have seen Dominik Dijakovic and Keith Lee in its purest form in person. Give me Chris Hero over Kassius Ohno any day. That reminds me of more thinks in my DVD collection that I need to get caught up on. As long as I am with a girl who still cannot keep the members of The Elite straight, I have enough classic NXT material to last a lifetime.

AEW is currently the fresher product and they still have lacked bouts I would skip. Once we get there...if we get there...I may start watching Xfinity 939 on Wednesday. WWE's only other way to get my attention is to give the minority owner of Hulu a break and put the Takeovers back on the service or for them to sign away AEW talent. At least we would have a war. On the subject of warfare.

90 min. Netflix "4 Got 10": Once Upon a Time with Zero Whimsey

a.k.a. "The Good, the Bad and the Dead"

It is a lot of work, but you need to do a little research once you say to yourself, "This could be fun." If a film has two titles, skip it. This will require both IMDb and Wikipedia, but until WWE licenses a Bray Wyatt montage before Nefllix's direct to DVD acquisitions, how will you know when to run.

Dated Wrestling Rant:

And that's how you increase your shareholders profits Vince McMahon. If you take that money and buy the "Broken Universe" from Anthem, the stock might result in a $1 dividend. GFW will survive as well. Preventing bad Dolph Lundgren flicks from being viewed is best for business.

Back to a tale of Wasting of Danny Trejo:

It is obvious a drug deal has gone bad. A used car parking lot (if not a car lot, a lot with a Martin Luther King Blvd address) with a corpse for each bumper serves as an homage to the desert standard "No Country for Old Men" set. Adding title cards for each archetype is usually the indications of an action flick with clever ambitions. Unfortunately, there is no witty dialogue when the sheriff (Michael Pare) shoots his deputy to go James Brolin on us only to receive a life-threatening shot to the ear from an amnesiac survivor (Johnny "Eric Young should have best cast" Messner). To keep the audience thinking, director Timothy Woodard Jr (who seems to have taken inspiration stylistically from Uwe Boll) is going to use a twist for every scene.

The primary twist is not the amnesia gimmick, it is the fact that the dead deputy is the rebellious son of Mateo Perez (Danny Motherlov'n Trejo), the biggest drug dealer the DEA has ever known. Perez will be on a quest for vengeance, the sheriff is out to save his own neck, and Rooker (Lungren) is trying to put the pieces together. With so many supporting players, the clueless amnesiac is suppose to hold the film together. Too bad there is not the necessary nudity or action sequences to amuse us on his quest to regain his memory.

"4 Got 10" has a shorter plot synopsis than "Death Squad", so that means it will be less painful. If you can endure the first 70 minutes, where only three rounds are fired, you will be rewarded with "MST3K" worthy, slow-motion-dependent action sequences. You may never curse Zack Snyder again. #releasethesnydercut

Woodward must have been desperate to avoid this film from being labeled a short. The overuse of slo-mo is so bad that you can see the stuntman's flammable gel before he goes up in smoke while still holding his own in a fire fight. If the humor was more than Lundgren digging through a truck stop trash can, we could have had a so bad it is good film.

"4 Got 10" is evidence that all screenwriters should follow the page a minute rule. If Sean Ryan did this, there would have been no reward in sitting through this garbage. Hence, it would not have been made. With that said, try googling "Danny Trejo slow-mo gun fight" and you may receive the fruit of this labor without wasting so much time.

Perhaps "4 Got 10" is the Li'l Bub of bad movies. No, that is probably "The Beast of Hollow Mountain" which is part of Netflix's "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return." Netflix has you taken care of regardless.
