Bonus Episode: ATL Comic Convention: Day One - The Panels Awaken

CatBusRuss⁠'s three star (at best) accommodations are not too far away from the Georgia World Congress Center, so not having a good time at his first ⁠ATL Comic Convention⁠ would be a difficult task. Our host was able to perhaps make new friends, or at the very least frenemies, as he sat in on four panels and served as a panelist for "⁠Knives in My Eyes: 20 Years of Brick⁠".

The panel dedicated to ⁠Rian Johnson⁠'s debut feature were for the true Johnson fans, so just ⁠CatBus⁠ and the "⁠Blood Orange⁠" comic co-creator, ⁠Tim Avers⁠. Tim also took part in a panel dedicated to "⁠Star Wars: The Force Awakens⁠" alongside friend of the show ⁠Bryan Young⁠ and "⁠The Last Jedi⁠'s" novelist ⁠Jason Fry⁠. These three had panels all throughout the day, so I am not questioning their fandom towards the mind behind "Episode VII". Hell, Fry has Rian's phone number.

The "Brick" panel will be released as a "⁠I Dig Crazy Flicks⁠" podcast in a few weeks, so not having an audience allowed the two to have a great conversation about the feature. In the end, people were coming in for the "⁠Tron: Heading Back to the Grid⁠ (CatBusRuss took part in that at Indiana Comic Convention and it is on this podcast feed.)" panel, so Tim and Russ did get a chance to sell this under seen gem to an audience before running to their next obligations.

CatBusRuss obviously attended the "Star Wars" panel that was mentioned. ("The Force Awakens" panel also featured ⁠Maggie Lovitt⁠, the lead news editor for "Collider") and Jason & Bryan's panel about Luke Skywalker's character in "The Last Jedi". The two remaining panels were back to back-to-back in the same room. This double header was opened with a panel about the film adaptation of "⁠V for Venedetta⁠" and hosted by filmmaker ⁠Mario DeAngelis⁠ and featured ⁠LiteraryHypeWoman⁠ Stephanie Carr, and novelists ⁠Kris Bird⁠ and ⁠Hollis Jo McCollum⁠. Mario then hosted a celebration about the art and life of ⁠David Lynch⁠ with Shawn Eastridge from the "⁠Missing Frames⁠" podcast and Tim Avers.

Because some listeners do not want to hear about an event they cannot attend second hand, CatBusRuss hopes to make up for that by reviewing ⁠John Carpenter's "In the Mouth of Madness"⁠. An ironically fitting film to choose because its title may explain any first-time comic con attendee's first experience.

Episode 229 - ATL Comic Con 2025 with the Only Guy to Get an F-Bomb from a Young Gun

Either celebrity involvement has finally come to "⁠I Dig Crazy Flicks with CatBusRuss⁠" or cease and desist letters are in the podcast's future. As they say, any press is good press.

Friday, the podcast professional ⁠CatBusRuss⁠ was a panelist for just one panel, "⁠Knives in My Eyes: 20 Years of 'Brick⁠'". Saturday, he got to sleep in because the only panel he "needed" to get to was "⁠Young Guns⁠ Spotlight with ⁠Kiefer Sutherland⁠ and ⁠Lou Diamond Phillips⁠". When you ask the only question that gets one of the stars to say the four-letter F-word, you would call the day a win. But the Peorian went on to conquer his shyness by meeting ⁠Bai Ling⁠and hopefully learned some new means to still make "⁠Main Event of the Dead⁠" a thing as he attended a panel about selling a comic book to the movies studios with ⁠Producer Rick Alexander⁠ and ⁠Comic Book Legend Steven Grant⁠.

To not seem too nerdy, ⁠Russ⁠ also attended the Atlanta United vs. Charlotte FC match at the Mercedes Benz Dome. Of course he bough a custom CatBusRuss jersey. He had not spent too much on the show floor, so a souvenir was needed from this trip. That would at least fit in his suitcase.

Sunday was CatBus's big day, and of course it started early. Caffeine and sugar were needed to recover from the soccer match and early morning rewatch of "⁠The Crow⁠". Was he going to be prepared for the "30 Years of the Crow Panel" having not watched the 2024 remake? How much anxiety would this bring him with that being his last panel?

CatBus did his best to hang with "Star Wars" experts when discussing "⁠20 Years of Revenge of the Sith⁠" with the crew from the "⁠Full of Sith Podcast⁠", but left feeling he might not be as attuned with the force as he thought. He got his momentum back with the debut of his new panel "1985 Triple Threat Match: Stallone vs. Schwarzenegger vs. The Cannon Group" with the help of director ⁠Mario DeAngelis⁠ and novelist ⁠Hollis Jo McCollum⁠. With that kind of confidence, he was sure to kill at "The Crow" panel with Streamer ⁠Faydra Black⁠...until...

FanX decided since they had the creator of the comic book creator, ⁠James O'Barr⁠, and actors Bai Ling, ⁠Rochelle Davis⁠, and ⁠Laurence Mason⁠ to represent the film at the convention, this became a spotlight panel. Could the CatBus hang with this level of talent, or at the very least, not make too much of an ass of himself? Was his "Fire It Up" chant too much?

This ended up being a very heavy weekend for a middled-aged podcaster in the best kind of way. He had to take a break in this recap to catch his breath and gather all the business cards of the coolest vendors from the show floor. Hopefully, you will enjoy his review of 1987 sci-fi action classic, "⁠The Hidden⁠". Please excuse his mispronunciation of ⁠Kyle MacLachlan⁠'s name.

Is it a good thing when a comic convention encourages one to sleep in? As long as the best content is available to a rested podcaster (at the price of $40), ⁠CatBusRuss⁠ shan't complain.

Our host did not watch "Suits", so he may not have been the best audience member for only knowing ⁠Rick Hoffman⁠ from "Hostel" and "The Condemned", so his primary goal was to capture the "⁠Hooked on a Feeling with the Cast of Guardians of the Galaxy: Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Michale Rooker⁠" panel. He was kind of let down that they kept the Rook confined to a chair, but how could you not have fun with such talent?

After a blah visit to the show floor, ⁠CatBus⁠ patiently waited an extra 35 minutes in the query queue for John Cena. He may have been the only one to ask the 17-time world champion an acting question. Thus, he will count that as a W.

And he needed a W as ⁠Bootleg Safari ⁠topped wicked "Simpsons" masks with the terror of ⁠Bruno Mattei⁠'s "⁠Terminator 2⁠". Fun was had. Knowledge of the Canadian tax shelter was gained. But reliving any element of that nightmare may have been too much for our host.

So, CatBus fondly remembers his experience watching "⁠Cyber Vengeance⁠", to get over the Italian trauma.

Episode 40: SkimbleSHANKS presents Wise Draculas and Dim Harkers.

Fresh off of an endorsement from "The ID10T Podcast", Cool Movies Darth (yours truly) and ThePoeticCritic continue the spooky season with a couple of "Dracula" movies. We compare, contrast, and celebrate Christopher Lee from "Dracula" 1958 and Frank Langella from "Dracula" 1979. It is Hammer Films vs Universal Studios and a John Williams score. Which is better?

 

 

This pairing made for an interesting drunken double feature. It also taught me how to arrange a double feature. You want to end on a positive note, so follow the Tomatometer. In this case, "Horror of Dracula" should have closed out my viewings for the night.

So I came into this podcast with the impression that Christopher Lee was the end all and be all of vampiric kings. The director of "Short Circuit" and "WarGames" did not offer Langella the opportunity to make a run at the crown. Who had the most inept Jonathan Harker is the only competition between the two. Sounds like Keanu Reeves was perfectly cast for Coppola's take on the tale.

 

Aside from finally adding some sexuality to English language bloodsuckers, 1979's take on Bram Stoker does not capture the charm of "Horror of Dracula". Hit and miss special effects do not help.

 

Do not even get me started on the 1992 revisions of it. I will no longer (not that I have as a member of the Church of Lucas) complain about George Lucas's special editions.

I would say the two of us were pretty much on the same page when it came to these feature. So this was a pretty easy rundown of the questions that I found to be important. It may have been so copacetic because we did not have to pull from the current cinema scene to make conversation. You best appreciate that we did not go all Team Scorsese on you. 

But, if you feel that we spend too much time in the past, I treat you to a brisk review about 2020's "Bit", a vampire comedy that earned a lot of accolades at queer film festivals. The story is a lot like "Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles" but throws in a feminist take of the mythology and I cannot help but love the nihilism that comes with bloodsuckers.

When ⁠CatBusRuss⁠ is at a comic convention where he is not serving as a panelist, the experience can be about remembering the sweet is never as sweet without the sour. (Anyone want to Zoom about "⁠Vanilla Sky⁠"?) This trip is virtually all inclusive (sans alcohol), so can there really be much to be sour about? Then came the journey of finding a Funko Pop! for an actor who was a last minute scratch from the ⁠Fan Expo Chicago⁠ line up (after he did the same at ATL Comic Convention).

Fortunately, the cosplay was great for the first day of a con (an anomaly), the visitors and exhibitors were friendly, the booze was easy to find, and ⁠CatBus⁠ got to end the night wailing on millennials and gen Z kids with foam swords and shields for 45 minutes. Aside from chasing Darkseid, it was a grand time.

There was no tattoo alley at this Fan Expo Chicago (a first), so maybe he will use the extra funds to get that ⁠Ewan McGregor⁠ autograph.

Hopefully the next day's panels will be as fun as "The Voices of Your Childhood: ⁠Bob West⁠, ⁠Phillip Glasser⁠, and ⁠Kate Micucci⁠" and "Bursting into the Scene with the Cast of ⁠Aliens⁠". They better be because its costing Russ's sponsors $40 to see one of them.

For those who cannot be sold on spending a grand for hotel and merch, our host has included a review for a giallo classic, "⁠Torso⁠". As these Fan Expo episodes drop, the films will only get weirder.

@QuidPro_Joe returns to stand up for the career of Adam Sandler, or at the very least remind us of the 10 years where he was the most reliable cinematic comic. If only Jim Carrey did not take himself so seriously.

 

We discuss how Adam Sandler's classics stack up to Chris Farley's. Another guest expresses more love for Paul Thomas Anderson's "Magnolia" which gives us a chance to reexamine everything from 1999. This includes a discussion that puts "Fight Club" in a battle with "Big Daddy". Who was the better teacher: Durden of Sandler?

 

The first half of our conversation covers all of the filmography of features that were just over 90 minutes. I cannot wait to rediscover how the two of us were able to keep chatting for another 90 minutes on top of that. I hope you enjoy some wrestling banter and tales of theater hopping to embrace R-rated features and Robert Rodriguez.

After WrestleMania Backlash, I will tell you that we need to take zombie pro wrestling back. My suggestion is that we finally get my low-budget zombie movie, "Main Event of the Dead" off the ground. The script lacks a lumberjack match, so you know it has got to be better than the "Army of the Dead" advertisement. Bonus Episode: Capital City Comic Con: Day 2 - The Opposite of David Carradine

With ATL Comic Convention scheduling him for all three days and the need to take four days off to take ThePoeticCritic up to Fan Expo Chicago, CatBusRuss chose to not take the time off to attend the one day at Capital City Comic Con that he was not scheduled for panels. And the hospitality and camaraderie that the nerds of Lansing, MI offered may lead our host to regret that.

No offense to Garrett Wang, but no one would call the list of guests a must see, The exhibition floor only had one light saber dealer, and the venue was pretty small. But 4C has been going on for 10 years, so they are obviously doing something right. And that is just having a very inviting atmosphere where geeks want to talk about weird stuff, not focus on $200 photo ops.

CatBusRuss had fun at all the panels he attended and participated in on Saturday. This leads him to hope that "I Dig Crazy Flicks Presents: Ninety For Chill - The Podcast" will actually have an audience. He does not want to eat all that punch and pie by himself.

As for David Carradine's name being in the title, CatBusRuss has posted a review of his 1988 feature, "Crime Zone" co-starring David Lynch muse Sherilyn Fenn. It is a story about creating criminals in a dystopian future so that the feds have someone to persecute. It is a clever idea for a Roger Corman production, and is quite the opposite of what Capital City Comic Con presented.

Episode 228 - Capital City Comic Con 2025: The Panel and Punch and Pie

After impressing nerds with his win percentage at Jeffrey Stansberry "Real or Fake: Movie Edition" and being the center of the board at "Hollywood Squares" the day prior, CatBusRuss felt great going into "Ninety For Chill: The Panel" at Capital City Comic Con. It was not his biggest audience, but Punch and Pie may have allowed him to have a wise audience to deliver his thesis of "Movies are way too long" to.

Our host did not have a guest going in to this panel, but 4C is about nerds chatting about nerd stuff. Photo ops and autographs seemed to come second. Thus, people wanted to talk about short-ass movies. Enough people to at least facilitate conversation. For a podcast, that is all you need.

CatBus got to chat a little Hitchcock, compared "Star Wars" fandom with panelist Chris Martinez, and received the weird suggestion to watch "El increíble profesor Zovek". These interactions made the 10 hours of travel worthwhile, and he cannot wait to return to Michigan's Capital City in 2026.
