The Schwartz Is Strong with ThePoeticCritic and The Kwazz

It is difficult to come up with an inclusive title for this podcast when it comes to my guests. I do not know how big a wrestling fan Jessica is. Can I picture her shouting, "I am the Kwazz. And I am Awwwesome!"?

Others titles I thought of were "Two Women Show the Parody More Respect than Disney Did the IP" or "Two Women Take "Star Wars" by the Schwartz (or Spaceballs)." Those seemed too wordy.

This week on NinetyForChill - The Podcast, Jessica Kwazz from the "Second Chance Movies Podcast" expresses her love for Mel Brook's "Spaceballs" while ThePoeticCritic returns with the history of how this feature became a classic. ThePoeticCritic and I discuss why "Star Wars" was nearly abandoned while Jessica regales us with her admiration of cinema's GREATEST franchise.

 

I did the best to put together the audio Jessica captured (and figure how to do that for myself) from last week. Since my side ended up not getting recorded (I blame being a Verizon customer and their history of not letting us multitask with their phones.), her conversing may sound weird, but her knowledge and articulation get her points across. And of course this geek is not going to exclude "Star Wars" content.

ThePoeticCritic on the other hand is not part of the cult of Lucas, so she provides us with a more balanced look on the history and making sure we know that there was a time where the "Star Wars" IP was just passé. This perception of the product might be why George Lucas would dismiss the criticism of the prequels because "They're kids movies". We also go on to discuss how the parody movie craze maybe remembered in a far fonder light than it should have been.

As for next week's show, I do not currently have that mapped out. It can be kept brief, but after England's defeat on Sunday, a person to converse with to get my mind off of that would be greatly appreciated. If you need some suggestions, movies like "Fear of a Black Hat", "UHF" and "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" can make for a great theme. ThePoeticCritic knew that Robert Downey Sr.'s satirical masterpiece, "Putney Swope" fits the pod's time restraints. There are also Tim Burton's early classics "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" and "Beetlejuice". Or we could just focus on movies Danny Elfman scored.

 

I have been asking for weeks for assistance in composing an episode dedicated to vampire features like "The Lost Boys" trilogy, "Near Dark", and the "Underworld" movies. After WrestleMania Backlash, I will tell you that we need to take zombie pro wrestling back. My suggestion is that we finally get my low-budget zombie movie, "Main Event of the Dead" off the ground. The script lacks a lumberjack match, so you know it has got to be better than the "Army of the Dead" advertisement. The Confused Project that Was Armitage III: The Motion Picture

 

While trying to archive other anime review from the Bus's Transit of Anime Realities, I discovered that I had also written an "Armitage III: Polymatrix" review for another website of mine AnimeFlow. The funny thing about this is that it is a counter to what I originally wrote. All I can say about this re-post is that it reads better, but to truly understand this anime, you might want to read the opposing side.

So, I'm schizophrenic. The good lord must want me to discover something new about my futile existence everyday just to prove his own. Jesus H Douche.

"Armitage III" was always a title I wanted to check out, but with so many other multi-video collections I was trying to complete, I didn't want to trouble myself with another one. So when I heard about the movie version, I was pretty sure I was going to buy it, and when I found out it featured the voices of Keifer Sutherland and Elizabeth Berkley that kind of sealed the deal.

Its great to see celebs trying to help bring this style of art to the main stream. This is the second anime feature length film I've ever bought, but I knew not to expect another "Akira", but this was pretty enjoyable despite it may seem at some points to be over done.

After finally viewing the original OVA series, some may appreciate the restraint the film had when compared to the material it was pieced together from. Then again it may just be an issue of preference. Do you want to dedicate days to the character over the top voice acting or not. Again, this is the fanboy in me wishing that anime DVD's were not released in complete sets, so that I could truly figure that out on my own terms if a series was worth continuing. Does disc one encourage me to buy disc two, or I have the movie, so I'll just put this disc on Half.com.

Of course, if you do not buy much anime and you just want to see this to see another Elizabeth character act like a slut ("Show Girls", "Any Given Sunday", Saved By the Bell type characters) you will be disappointed. This is not one of the reasons I bought the tape, but you some time wonder when is this Cop in hot pants is going to get naked.

Ross Sylibus has left the Chicago PD for the Martian PD after his partner was killed by a cyborg. He immediately gets involved in some traditional movie cop action with a shoot out at the space port where his new partner, Naomi Armitage, is trying to apprehend one of the flights passengers. During the shoot out the criminals suitcase opens and we find the dead body of the universe's only remaining country singer (^_^Yay^_^) Kelly McCannonen. After the suspect escapes, Armitage and Ross find out that the victim is a robot.

Just as Ross is settling in, the murderer, Rene D'amclaude pirates the TV signal to show a montage of the murders other female robots he's takes credit for and calls for a revolution of the "Thirds". With antirobot feelings on Mars, this man gets a lot of support, but the higher ups in the PD seemed to be more concerned with Armitage's drive to solve these cases?

The biggest flaw in the film is that it tries to cover too much in too little time. This is the same plot as the series, so the action has to be hurried. It would appear that there is little room left for the characters' emotions, but it is actually being loyal to the OVA. Some of the voice acting is pathetic, and Sutherland seems to try too hard, but Berkley does a great despite it being an overly whining lead character. This was probably the way the series and film stand behind a claim that the show is quite emotional.

Voice, body what else does Liz need? A decent agent.

The artwork and animation are great. Just looking at still shots and posters doesn't do the film justice since these drawing are beautiful in action. The plot does seem to have too many variables like how the Thirds can be impregnated. Confusion or a sense of over stimulation is all that creates. Despite all this, its extremely enjoyable without the addicting nature of the series.

Armitage III - Polymatrix is not addicting, its not excellent, but maybe the opium suppository for the anime fan with a budget. Just a hit to get you by.

Okay, so technically, I swung and missed when it came to providing my listeners with "Spaceballs: The Podcast Special Edition", but Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy's Trash Feature Review was for "The Marine" with John Cena. As a wrestling fan, the right is hence reserved to blame everything bad involving wrestling on John Cena. Do we blame him if this "The Suicide Squad" sucks?

I just have to be upfront and apologize. A miscommunication with my guest resulted in only half the audio from "Spaceballs: The Podcast" being recorded. Hopefully my hot takes on WWE Studio's "The Marine" with John Cena will amuse you. If not, there are still some digital movie deals offered up to you. Saw 3D (The Final Chapter): Star Trek of Horror?

"Saw" had just reached the same number of "Star Trek (Original Series)" films. With an open ending that may introduce a new character to focus on (Antagonist or protagonist is dependent upon you interpretation of John Kramer's mission.) like "Star Trek: Generations", a new series maybe created. But what makes "Saw" most like "Trek" is that there maybe a number curse to the series (This review was written after seeing this film in theaters.) That is a bit of a stretch since "Saw" and "Saw 5" are worthwhile, but with the quality of this feature, Twisted Pictures may as well called this one "Saw 7"

Det. Hoffman is still carrying on Kramer's work, but vengeance clouds his mind. I suppose having half your face ripped open by Jill Tuck, Kramer's wife and fellow game practitioner, will do that. While Bobby, a man who has become famous by claiming to be a Jigsaw survivor, is being tested, Jigsaw's last known apprentice is planning to settle his score with Tuck and a rival detective from internal affairs.

Hopefully, that description of "Saw 3D: The Final Chapter" did not spoil anything for you. This simplicity maybe what holds the film back from being worthwhile despite brilliant makeup and 3D effects.

The best films in the series are dependent upon being more clever than brutal. "Saw 3D", being the final chapter, horror aficionados Melton and Dunstan felt it was more important to get every gross thing we had not seen than providing a enjoyable story.

To claim this film as awesome, you may need to be a perverse individual. You have to solely enjoy gore. This "Saw" does not justify why it is inescapable. Extreme gore is fun, but only if there is a good reason for it. This is why the first two "Feast" films (written by Dunstan and Melton) were fun, and the third making us call bullshit.

Perhaps Costas Mandylor was misused while Tobin Bell was underused. This film has the highest body count of the series (and perhaps equal to all of the films combined). Most of them are innocents which is unlike the past films while Hoffman is near super human in his march for vengeance. Not only do the games' contestants have hopeless situations, anyone who is not the murderer is as well.

The best thing about "Saw 3D" is the use of 3D. As long as there are thing being constantly thrown at the audience, we ignore how poor the direction is. The traps are also suspenseful, but that may be due to wanting to see at least one person get away.

Do I want there to be a "Saw 8"? Yes, the ending offers a potentially brilliant Jigsaw and there have to still be some great trap ideas left. But like "Saw 4", we need new blood to revive the story.

"Saw 3D is not the worst of the franchise, but it is clear that Patrick Melton and Mark Dunstan have run out of ideas for this franchise. We maybe out of fake blood as well (This is before the abundance of CG blood, so I may have predicted that). With a series that does not require a real villain, how can we be out of good stuff?

Evangelion 1.01: You Can(not) Overlook

 Am I crazy for entertaining the concept of reinventing the "Star Wars" trilogy? Trekkies gave into J.J. Abrams's concept and ended up embracing it, and the flaws of Lucas's scripts are quite prevalent.

Blasphemy. Well, we would all like to reboot the "Saga". No one can deny that, but when it comes to near perfection (with the exception of "Return of the Jedi"), why bother?

It is because we are starved for greatness and we will take our chances. That is why Hideaki Anno's reboot of "Evangelion" captured the world of anime's attention.

Shinji Ikari has been called to Tokyo-3 by his neglectful father Gendo. When he arrives, the city is under a military state of emergency and a battle with a giant monster ensues. After he is rescued by his chaperone, Lt. Col. Misato Katsuragi, he his escorted to Nerv's headquarters to find out his father's expectations. The primary one of these is for this 14 year-old to pilot a giant robot called Evangelion Unit 01 to defeat the monster.

 Should he fail, humanity is lost. But not being able to appreciate his own existence, why should Shinji care about the fate of mankind?

"Evangelion 1.01" is nearly identical in character design to the original television show, but it is far more than just a special edition of the first six episodes. This is a more concise version of the "Evangelion" story with an atmosphere that is more fitting of the dark conclusions of the initial series.

All of the mecha and kaiju have been visually upgraded and the theatrical budge is evident. Since budget held back the production quality of the first series, fans should definitely appreciate the upgrades. That is provided that they can get past the first two acts of the story being exactly like the first four episodes.

It can be frustrating that the "Rebuild of Evangelion's" story does not begin until act three, especially since the comic interactions between Shinji and the supporting cast are all but eliminated. The charm and optimism are removed, so those who did not appreciate the previous two endings that Anno had provided us, they may be left upset.

Those frustrations are worth enduring for the brilliant third act. The new vision and hints of what is coming up left me salivating for the film's sequel. On top of that, the action and drama sequences are greater than anything presented in the first half of the television series.

"Evangelion 1.01" is a great experience that promises even more to come. It provides incite into Anno's true vision that was confined to the restraints of 90's television. It is a darker journey, but well worth enduring for the reward of a new future for the franchise.
